Is Remanufactured Ammo Worth It? Let’s Break It Down
Yesterday was range day, and we decided to test out some new (remanufactured) ammo that’s been getting a lot of buzz, HSL Ammo. With brass flying and our targets set out to 200 yards, we wanted to see if budget-friendly reman ammo could really hold its own.
Note: We purchased this ammo ourselves directly from HSL, and as always, you’ll get nothing but our honest, unfiltered take. Just real world testing with real world results.
To keep things legit, we brought out our Athlon Rangecraft chronograph to get hard data on velocity. (If you haven’t read our deep-dive on that gear, you can check it out here when you’re done.)
But before we dive into the results (spoiler: we were impressed), let’s talk about what remanufactured ammo actually is and whether it makes sense for your training stash, your wallet, or your rifle.
What Is Remanufactured Ammo?
Remanufactured ammo is kind of like a rebuilt classic car. It uses previously fired brass cases that are cleaned, resized, and reloaded with new primers, powder, and bullets. Think of it as recycled ammo with a fresh lease on life.
This isn’t your cousin’s garage reloads using whatever powder he got in a mystery bag at a gun show. When done right, remanufactured ammo can rival factory-new performance and at a better price.
✅ The Pros
Cost Savings Let’s get the obvious one out of the way: reman ammo is usually cheaper. And not just a little cheaper sometimes a lot cheaper, especially when you’re buying in bulk for range time.
♻️ Eco-Friendly (ish) Reusing brass cuts down on waste. For those of us who want to shoot more and waste less, that’s a win.
Great for Training and Practice For drills, plinking, and skill-building sessions, reman ammo is an excellent budget-conscious option.
Quality Can Be Excellent Some companies take remanufacturing seriously and produce consistent, reliable rounds. Their quality control is on point, and their stuff runs clean and smooth.
Range Day Results: Putting HSL Ammo to the Test
Yesterday was range day, and we decided to run some HSL 55 grain FMJ reman ammo through its paces. My wife took the reins with her AR-15 featuring a 20-inch barrel and a 1:7 twist rate.
Here’s how it went down:
Shots Fired: 50
Average Velocity: 3035.1 fps
Min/Max: 2941.9 fps – 3123.0 fps
Standard Deviation: 61 fps
Advertised Velocity: 3100 fps
Group Size: Roughly 1 inch at 200 yards
Chrono Data HSL 223 Ammo
Yes, you read that right – 1 MOA at 200 yards with remanufactured ammo. That’s the kind of result that makes you look over at your wallet and whisper, “We’re gonna be okay.”
HSL 223 Ammo Grouping at 200yds
Was it match-grade ammo? No. But it sure shot like it wanted to be when it grew up.
❌ The Cons
⚠️ Not All Reman Is Created Equal This is a big one. There’s a wide gap between high-quality reman and the “hope and a prayer” reloads you sometimes find in bulk bins. Stick with known names, like HSL Ammo, to avoid reliability or safety issues.
Possible Compatibility Issues Some manufacturers recommend avoiding reman ammo in specific firearms, especially if you’re running match-grade barrels, tight chambers, or certain semi-autos that are picky eaters. Always check your owner’s manual or ask a gunsmith.
Range Restrictions Believe it or not, some indoor ranges prohibit remanufactured ammo altogether, even if it’s high-quality. This usually has more to do with liability than actual performance, but it’s worth calling ahead before you show up.
Final Verdict
If you’re shooting frequently and want to get the most bang for your buck (literally), remanufactured ammo is absolutely worth considering as long as you’re buying from a reputable manufacturer.
And in my experience, HSL Ammo fits that bill. The recent range session confirmed they’re producing some seriously consistent rounds that perform better than you’d expect for the price.
Oh, and good news—we’ve got some HSL ammo in stock. Check our inventory to see what’s available. Or if you’d rather go straight to the source, you can order directly from HSL Ammo and have it shipped right to your door.
So whether you’re punching paper, ringing steel, or just making brass rain on a Saturday, don’t sleep on reman. Just do your homework and buy smart.
Tried remanufactured ammo before? Got a favorite brand or a story from the range? Drop a comment or send a message, let’s swap notes.

The SAR9 Gen1 Full Size surprised me in the best way. Comfortable in the hand, easy to shoot, and built with military testing in mind, it is a solid duty style pistol that does not get nearly enough attention.
