I use the FBI stolen gun database for these checks, which is the best nationwide resource available and has now been made available to FFLs. It is simple, private, and helps keep everyone safe. It is also a really good idea to check a serial number before you buy the gun. A little peace of mind goes a long way.

A quick heads up on limitations:
This check will only show firearms that have been officially reported stolen and entered into the FBI system. If the gun was never reported stolen or the serial number was recorded incorrectly, it may not appear. This is not a legal ownership verification and it does not replace a full background check or due diligence during a private sale.
